The Carolina Panthers will start Baker Mayfield against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 11.
P.J. Walker suffered a high ankle sprain in Thursday night’s win over the Atlanta Falcons, forcing Mayfield back into the starting lineup on Monday morning.
Despite playing through the injury, Wilks said Walker would not be available against Baltimore. At this point, the coach does not expect Walker to go on injured reserve.
Mayfield will be backed up by Sam Darnold, who just returned from an ankle injury.
With five starts in the first five games of the season, Mayfield struggled mightily, completing 54.9 percent of his passes for 962 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions. In Week 5, Walker took over the starting role after he suffered his own ankle injury.
Walker was replaced by Mayfield at halftime of Week 9’s blowout loss to Cincinnati, but Wilks decided to stick with Walker, who has led the Panthers to two victories this season.
The news means Mayfield will face a familiar foe in Baltimore. The QB started eight games against the Ravens during his four seasons in Cleveland. The Browns went 3-5 in those starts, with Mayfield generating an 83.2 passer rating with 13 TDs to 9 INTs versus Baltimore.
