It won’t be Trey Lance’s first NFL start against the Bears this weekend, but it will be his first start since he became the 49ers’ full-time starter.
In spite of Lance stepping into Jimmy Garoppolo’s starting lineup a few times last season, his offense wasn’t designed around him. According to Bears head coach Matt Eberflus, those outings will not provide a lot of insight into how this season’s 49ers offense will look.
According to Curtis Pashelka of the San Jose Mercury News, Eberflus said, “You’re projecting a little bit.”. “You have to imagine how and where they will use the young man.”. We know what this offense will entail. But no one really knows how they’re going to use him. Rules must be followed, calls must be made, and you must be sound.”
The 49ers will have to do some feeling out themselves as it is the first time Eberflus and his staff will be coaching the team in a regular season game, but due to the bets they made on Lance at the top of the 2021 draft and this offseason, there will likely be a greater focus on how they deploy him.
